The Art of India
A special thank you to Mrs. Nagalkar for all of her help with our cultural study of India. See below the wonderful demonstration of the art of sand painting!
Kindergarten - The children enjoyed drawing a snowy scene with Rudolph and painted thumb print Christmas lights! For their India project they used painted bubble wrap to print a Hamsa style hand print. They used plastic needles, yarn and beads to decorate it!
Literature: "Riding on a Caravan" by Laurie Krebs
"The Elephant Dance A Journey to India" by Theresa Heine
Grades 1 & 2 - Literature - "Riding on a Caravan" by Laurie Krebs
The children drew or used a template to draw a camel. In Rajasthan camels are decorated with tassels, beads and tattoos! This project allowed the children to draw and decorate their camels. They enjoyed making potted pointsettia collages!
Grades 3 & 4 - Literature "Finders Keepers? A Bus Trip in India" by Robert Arnett
The Peacock - the national bird of India The students drew beautiful chalk pastel peacocks. They understand that the peacock is a symbol of grace, joy, beauty and love.
They also completed their sponge painted pointsettias for display!
Grades 5 & 6 - The Taj Mahal mixed medium. The students learned the significance of the Taj Mahal, one of the most famous buildings in the world. They used a simple template and straight edge to draw this complex looking structure. They will use watercolors to create a reflection of the building in their painting.
Grades 7 & 8 - Henna Hand watercolor designs. Students traced their hands and used black marker to fill them in with henna inspired designs. They drew contour elephant drawings and filled them in with Mehendi designs. They also finished their holiday sleigh bells chalk compositions!
