Pre-School - Literature: "Cleo and Cornelius: A Tale of Two Cities and Two Kitties" by Elizabeth Nicholson. After cutting a symmetrical goblet out of black paper, children will make their special Roman cup look like real glass by gluing tissue paper pieces to the form!
Kindergarten - Literature: "Cleo and Cornelius". The children will turn a simple paper plate into a shield of armor! They will add gold tissue paper and a simple silhouette of a Roman symbol.
Grade 1 - "Cleo and Cornelius" This lesson introduces students to architecture and building with paper! We will arrange simple shapes to form the famous Pantheon of Rome, Italy.
Grade 2 - Lit.: "Cleo and Cornelius" & "Findout! Ancient Rome" by Peter Chrisp. Students will create a portrait of themselves as an ancient Olympian! They will add a special crown of olive leaves!
Grade 3 - Lit: - "Where is the Colosseum?" by Jim O'Connor. Colosseum mixed media. Our lesson will focus on this amazing 2000 year old structure! Students will draw the colosseum and scrunch up the paper to make it look like stone! They will use dark chalk pastels to create depth in their project.
Grade 4 - Lit. - "Ancient Rome" . Students investigate the wars that took place in ancient times and the use of ancient armor. They will create a painted helmet using the double loading method. They will add a tissue paper plume for a wonderful 3-D effect.
Grade 5 - In this lesson the students will use black oil pastel and oil chalks to draw a striking Roman bust portrait. They will add a marble pedestal of painted paper. They will be able to identify Ionic, Doric and Corinthian columns!
Grade 6 - As is tradition the sixth grade will draw and paint a Greek amphora. They will add images that tell the story of everyday ancient Greek life. They will add bands of geometric shapes.
Grades 7 & 8 - Students will observe and discuss pictures of the Parthenon. They will know that it was built as a temple to the Greek goddess Athena. They will use two point perspective to draw the Parthenon and add hatching, cross-hatching and stippling to create light and dark areas.
