Grade Pre-K - Literature - "Hula Lullaby" by Erin Kono, "One Tiny Turtle" by Nicola Davies. The children enjoyed coloring a Hula dancer! They used bubble art and real sand to create a beach scene! They did a great job drawing and painting a sea turtle watercolor resist!
Kindergarten - After reading "Hula Lullaby", the children blew bubbles with paint to create an ocean scene with a beautiful Hawaiian sunset. They added real sand!
Grade 1- Literature - "A is for Aloha" by U'ilani Goldsverry. Surfboard Collage - In this lesson the students will be surfboard designers! They will get to choose the lines and patterns that will decorate their three surfboards on the beach. Review of line types and patterns.
Grade 2 - Literature - "A is for Aloha" The students built a Kon-Tiki type raft with sail using craft sticks!
Grade 3 - Literature - "The Color of the Night" by Helen Kerillis. The students will learn about the Hawaiian Hula and draw a dancer wearing a traditional outfit. A great start to figure drawing.
Grade 4 - Painted paper ukeleles for implied texture and added embellishments for actual texture.
Grade 5 - Students will learn about artist Paul Gauguin and how he was famous for the art he made in the post-impressionistic style while living in Tahiti. They will create a painting in the style of Gauguin.
Grade 6- Literature - "The Impossible Voyage of the Kon-Tiki" by Deborah Kogan Ray. By exploring the Kon-Tiki expedition from South America to the Polynesian Islands, students experience a cross-curricular lesson that focuses on art techniques, literature, history and geography. Cartography - Students will create a map using watercolor and pencil for details. We will observe and discuss the works of Gauguin.
Grades 7 & 8 - Traditional Cook Island Tivaevae paper art. Literature - "The Art of Tivaevae" by Lynnsay Rongokea. Introduction to the works of Paul Gauguin.
