A visit
with
Leonardo!
Leonardo will be on display all month in the art room.
Pre-K-The children enjoyed "The First Drawing" by Mordicai Gerstein. They loved learning about printmaking by pressing their hand in tempera paint and pressing it on the "cave wall". This was done by "torch" light!
Kindergarten-Kindergartners sponge painted a "cave wall" by "torch light" and added their handprints. They loved the story of "The First Drawing".
Grade 1 - LIterature, Line and Texture! "Stone Age Boy" by Satoshi Kitamura. The children enjoyed using chalk pastels to draw animals on textured paper. They crumpled up and smoothed out their drawing paper to create the texture of a cave wall.
They also read "Kitten's First Full Moon" by Kevin Henkes. They drew a kitten and mixed bits of black and white to create varying shades of grey to paint their kitten.
Grade 2 & 3 - "The First Dog" by Jan Brett. The children enjoyed learning about unique, prehistoric woolly mammoths with their long tusks! They learned about texture and etched short repeating lines in the wet paint to make the mammoth look like it had shaggy fur!
Grade 4 - "Discovery in the Cave" by Mark Dubowski - Students learned about form and created a three dimensional petroglyph from clay by forming a clay ball in to a tile. They used a wooden dowel to etch their drawings into the clay.
Grade 5 - "Discovery in the Cave" Students created a 3 dimensional composition. They made their own scratch paper with oil chalks and black tempera paint. They etched shapes and symbols using repetition to create an artwork that seems active and tells a story!
Grade 6 - Rick Steve's Cave Video - Students will work on their hatching and cross-hatching skills in order to loosely draw and give texture to their shaggy woolly mammoths.
Grade 7 & 8 - This Stonehenge line drawing depicts one of the most famous sites in the world. Stonehenge is a simple structure so this line drawing is simple too. The element of form is created by giving each of the rectangular stones an implied three dimensional effect. Students created a contour line drawing of this ancient monument by drawing stones in a post and lintel construction. They added implied texture with organic shapes, short lines and dots.
