Frida Kahlo

Kindergarten - The children enjoyed cutting out Diego Rivera-inspired sunflowers. They painted the centers and added a stem. They put the finishing touches on their black crows and enjoyed the story of "The Shy Scarecrow". Later this month we will explore symmetry. We will draw and paint monarch butterflies.
Grades 1 & 2 - Literature - "Trucks Whizz! Zoom! Rumble! by Patricia Hubbell. The children will draw and paint pumpkin trucks! Introduction to "Frida & Diego". The children enjoyed "Tortuga Time" by drawing tortugas and adding shapes, patterns and a desert scene background!
Grades 3 & 4 - Students will learn about Frida Kahlo and use the information to create a still life "market day" collage with painted paper. They will practice drawing, folding, and cutting to create their compositions.
Grades 5 & 6 - Introduction to Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. Students will use symmetry and transfer technique to create a Diego-inspired "flower vendor" collage. They will draw half of an image on folded paper. They will use rubbing to transfer the image. They will add flowers and bright colors!
Grades 7 & 8 - Introduction to many of Frida Kahlo's and Diego Rivera's works of art. Students will learn about artist Frida Kahlo and use this information to create a portrait inspired by her surrealist style. They will draw a portrait using accurate proportions for the facial features. Students will be able to summarize what they have learned about her style.
