Pre-K & Kindergarten - Literature: "Perfectly Percy" by Paul Schmid. The children will enjoy a story about a porcupine who loves balloons! We will draw a porcupine and talk about lines, texture and printmaking!
Grades 1 & 2 - Literature: "Together" by Emma Dodd. The children will learn about lines and create an implied texture of fur on their sea otter drawings! They will experiment with color mixing to create tints and use a fun stamping technique with bubble wrap to add texture to their background!
Grades 3 - Literature: "Grumpy Monkey" by Suzanne and Max Lang. The students will learn that it is okay to feel your feelings! They will learn about facial expressions and decide which expression they would like to portray on their monkey! They will be using line, texture, space and repetition for this fun project.
Grade 4 - Secondary Color Sloth - This lesson focuses on reinforcing the color wheel by only using the three secondary colors: violet, orange and green. In addition, students will create their own leaf stencils for their rainforest background. Inspiration for this lesson came from Susan & James Patterson's book "Cuddly Critters for Little Geniuses."
Grade 5 - Literature: "Armadillo Ray" by John Beifuss and Peggy Turley. Students will learn about line and space so they can create an overlapping desert scene featuring an armadillo. They will use scratch art to add texture to their project. We will learn about the phases of the moon for a wonderful science connection.
Grade 6 - Students will observe and talk about pictures of great blue herons and the quiet, graceful beauty they exude. They will draw a realistic blue heron. They will use tissue paper decoupage background and a scraping method to create feathers. Line, shape, texture, decoupage and value.
Grade 7 - Literature: "Eye Spy: Wild Ways Animals See the World" by Guillaume Duprat. This lesson focuses on the eyes of the animal! It will give the students a chance to look closely at their source material and draw from observation. Students will create a striking foam print of their sketch on black paper. They will learn about measurement and contrast so they can print, trim and mount their work.
Grade 8 - Students will observe the art of David Hale whose work is inspired from nature and Native American symbols. This is a fun project where students can draw the animal of their choice. We will talk about animals and their habitats. They will use line, pattern, shape and variety to draw habitat scenes inside the body of the animal! For the background they will use a geometric shapes to create a color blocked background.
