Pre-K and Kindergarten - Literature: "Music is a Rainbow" by Stephan Earl. Our lesson focused on color recognition, sorting, cutting and pasting with a musical twist! Each child had a turn playing the xylophone and created their art based on rainbow order!
Grades 1 & 2 - Literature: "What a Wonderful World" by Ashley Bryan. The children listened to Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World" while they worked and were inspired to think about the beauty in the world! They are creating a colorful watercolor puppet show that brings the song lyrics to life! We also painted Santa Selfies!
Grade 3 - Literature - "Singing in the Rain" by Tom Hopgood. Students will create a simple, moody, rainy day as their background and then add contrast with a bright painted paper figure. They enjoyed watching Hollywood star Gene Kelly sing the title song from the 1952 movie "Singin’ in the Rain"!
Grade 4 - Literature: "Zin!, Zin!, Zin! a Violin" by Lloyd Moss. Video: Sydney Youth Orchestra. The students will fold, draw and cut out a symmetrical tuxedo and bow tie to create a musician! They will draw an instrument that is proportional to their musician. They will know at least 3 facts about an orchestra!
Grade 5 - Students will learn about Cuban history's evolution of female drummers in the book "Drum Dream Girl" by Margarita Engle. They will explore figure drawing and painting! Video: Students enjoyed a song performed by Millo’s sisters’ band, Anacaona.
Grade 6 - Students loved this lesson that combines the swinging tunes of Duke Ellington with visual art focusing on movement! They used swirling lines and colors inspired by the vibrant, jazzy sounds of Duke Ellington. Swirling line drawing, color theory, movement, and music connections are just some of the concepts explored in this lesson.
Grade 7 - Students will learn about the artist Wassily Kandinsky and his abstract style of art inspired by music. They will use lines and large shapes to draw an instrument in an abstract style! They will add color with oil pastels and glue scraps of sheet music to create a balanced collage.
